MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Flood preparations in Scott County have been underway for some time, but this week’s weather forecast has officials concerned.
According to Chris Weldon, emergency management director for Scott County, a serious ice jam has already developed at the Highway 19 bridge on the Minnesota River at Henderson.
“That forced the closure of 19. On the east side there’s water coming over the highway. That concerns me in that, when that jam gives way, there will be a large amount of water coming down stream,” said Weldon.
And things will not get easier for Scott County as the forecast calls for more snow and rain over the next 48 hours.
“We are staying in touch with the National Weather Service. They are very good about sending out updated information. It’s unknown at this time how much precipitation it’s going to bring into the area, so that will also affect what we’re looking at.”
Weldon asks that anyone who sees an ice jam along the river please call Scott County’s Non-Emergency number at (952) 496-8181.
