BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) — A fatal, multi-vehicle accident brought traffic on eastbound I-494 at Highway 5 near the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to a standstill Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 11:30 a.m. near Post Road, causing a major back-up. The road was down to only one lane for most of the afternoon, but has since reopened.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 25-year-old driving a Chevy Suburban southbound on Highway 5 went through the median and struck a Lincoln Navigator heading north on Highway 5, head-on.

The Suburban then struck a Volkswagen Phaeton and Dodge Caravan that were also heading northbound on Highway 5.

Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske said a passenger in one of the vehicles was killed in the crash. Roeske did not release the name of the person nor did he say in which vehicle he or she was riding.

Eight other people were involved in the crash and received minor or non-life-threatening injuries.

@ Never Satisfied and the Other “Hine-sight is 20-20” Clowns:

Ever wonder if better driving could have prevented this accident?

    Think about it.

    1. Linda says:

It is spelled “hind-sight” and you are cold hearted-shame on you Dan.

    2. Anna says:

Thank god you were there to help!

    3. Mij says:

You should be careful with your comments Dan. You gave away some information the family may want private.

      1. guest says:

@Mij – the family doesn’t have the choice. There’s nothing in place within the law that prohibits someone from sharing what they witnessed, whether right or wrong.

      2. Jim says:

Hey Mij. The post has been deleted and it was Jim, who posted it. The only thing I mentioned, that is not in the updated article, is his leg being trapped.

  2. Mark Fahrendorff says:

Too many people being distracted by cell phones, etc. And following too close!!

    1. Beth says:

especially down there. I work at the airport and every day I see people trying to get to one terminal or the other and in the confusion they are either messing with their gps, or cell phones. And like you said, the big one, riding too closely. It’s sad…

  3. stewy says:

WOW, that’s all you have to say about this is ” the bad roads” what about saying a prayer for the families involved in this accident someone lost a loved one. My prayes and thoughts are with the families involved and for the accident victims. Very sad day on MN highways please drive with caution!

    1. Eagle13 says:

      Hey stewy,

Not all of us believe in the power of prayer. Call me cold hearted but I don’t find it “sad”. Driving is a risk we choose to take. For all we know the truck that crossed the median could have suffered a separated tie rod or ball joint from hitting a pothole. We will probably never know the entire story.

  4. jimmybuffet says:

Hind-sight is a common colloquialism. Hine-sight is a made up word. Just sayin

  5. stewy says:

I agree Mark people do need to drive and pay attention just another tragic story

  6. Guest says:

So sad, my thoughts & prayers will be with the families…

  7. Kate Sacvhel says:

Love that people comment on this without even having any details of what caused the accident. Everyone always assumes. Sad. My prayers are w/those who lost their loved one today.

  8. rear end says:

Cops should start giving out tickets to all crashes. I’m sick of these people rear ended other people and getting away with just a insurance slap. It should be whenever you rear end any one you should get a ticket regardless because you are following too close.

    1. MR says:

Sorry, but “too close” is not always the reason, so I hope someday you remember that when you run into the person that “dashes” into your lane rather than wait in a long line. That should be a ticket on the person that assumes that you should be able to “make room” for them.

  9. red says:

I agree people, no stupid comments til you know what cause this tragic accident.

  10. Kay says:

@ rear end – this wasn’t a rear-end crash, it was a head-on crash. Do you read anything before you post?

  11. Kay says:

@ Jim – I hope you’re doing okay right now; it must have been horrible to witness what you did. Bless you for stopping to assist!

    1. anna says:

I agree that would be very hard to witness!

  12. peterbilt says:

Minnesota has some of the worst drivers in the world

    1. fred says:

i would have to agree….this is turning into a daily event.

  13. guest says:

@Mij – the family doesn’t have the choice. There’s nothing in place within the law that prohibits someone from sharing what they witnessed, whether right or wrong.

  14. samatha says:

sad idea yipping at death .one wonders Kracktup if you are human ???? We need rail transportation and better roads I think that creates jobs and these big gas Eating cars are not safe as people think they are I wonder what could have happened if they were in a Volvo ???????

  15. chimp says:

Wet road is not a bad road condition, if i ever get the news i have 1 week to live, bad drivers will pay the price….

  16. hmoob Lee says:

stupid people that don’t know how to drive, just go ride a bike dumb people

  17. Just Say'n says:

One should always drive defensivly. If we all drove like it could be our last journey, we would have very few fatal accidents. This is a tragic event that took a loved one. I’ve driven the freeways here for 25 years now, all day every day. I’ve seen innocent people taken and wreckless people taken. If people drove the actual speed limit, and payed attention at all times, most deaths would not occur on our roads.

  18. Samantha's Brain says:

Using extra punctuation does not make your comment any more rational nor you any less moronic. Go to sleep.

    Your Brain

  19. Outraged at atupid comments says:

oh my f’ing god you heartless people – how the hell do you get off posting some of this junk? Unless you were in that SUV and KNOW what happened then you need to shut up about reckless driving and deserving to die. NO ONE knows yet what happened in this scenario – not all accidents occur from reckless driving. I almost died in an accident 8 years ago and the accident was the result of a 22 year old man having a sudden heart attack behind the wheel – turns out he had an undiagnosed heart condition.

Jesus people – show a little humanity until someone tells us that recklessness or aclohol was a factor.

  20. To Swerver says:

Seriously?! You can’t seriously mean that people DESERVE to die if they are involved in an accident. You haven’t been involved in an accident….yet. Neither have I and I have 10 years on you. But that’s not to say it CAN’T happen. And if it does, I would certainly not expect that you DESERVE death as a result. Good heavens, have some compassion for the people who were involved in this tragic loss of life. If we extend our HEARTS to people instead of our HATE, the wold could be a more tolerable place to live in. Peace to you and all who travel the roadways. Condolences to the families who are now struggling with this tragedy.

  21. anna says:

@swerver u never know what could happen many situations cause accidents! Drunk driving, heart attacks, default on the cars part etc you just pray something never happens to you. I hope you do not really feel people that were hit by drunk drivers deserve to die.

  22. His Family says:

Thank you to the many that have kept my family in prayer. No one knows the full details of what happened on this sad day… But I lost a cousin and it hurts not only to have to deal with the fact that Ill never see him again but it truly hurts to see that people don’t have a heart in a situation like this. (He was the passenger of one of the vehicles) Tall but small guy…

Continue to pray for His Family and the Children he has left behind…

  23. Blaa Blaa Blaa says:

    Old people…enough said.

  24. Compassion says:

WCCO should look at these comments before they are posted! There is hate in these posts when there should NOT be, especially in this kind of story! The family of the person who got killed are reading this stuff! If you people can’t say anything good, then don’t say anything at all!

  25. god fearing says:

Wow, I am quite amazed at how these comments are so negative and I should say that it is people like you that are the reason we are having wars and other bad unspeakable things going on in this world today! Do you all remember the weather conditions yesterday? It was quite slippery outside, I was walking and almost slipped and fell like 20 times just going a block away from my house!! what ever the situation was that caused many heartache and grief as well as loss, obviously he is in a better place and standing beside his 1 and only judge!!

  26. god fearing says:

Oh yeah, one more thing… it is the heartless, uncaring, undeserving, selfish, greedy, ignorant, hateful, spiteful, and cruel people like you that are the reason we are at war in this world!
