Dog Day In St. Paul: Dayton Brings Puppy To Work

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Gov. Mark Dayton's new puppy, Wanamingo, was guest of honor at a state Capitol ceremony -- but the black German shepherd that Dayton calls "Mingo" was more interested in sniffing carpet in the governor's office.

The mayor and several officials from the southeastern Minnesota town of Wanamingo presented Dayton and Mingo with a custom nametag Thursday.

Dayton already has a German shepherd named Mesabi. He got Wanamingo earlier this month from a farm in Clara City, to replace another German shepherd, Dakota, who died in January.

Dayton says he picked the name by reading through a list of Minnesota city names. City officials say the town of about 1,000 people near Red Wing was named after the heroine of a novel about American Indians published around 1850.
