FREEPORT, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota farmer who’s under investigation for distributing unpasteurized milk says he’ll continue to do so, even if it means going to jail.
Alvin Schlangen of Freeport in Stearns County is an organic egg producer and an advocate of natural foods. Schlangen says he delivers raw milk and other dairy products he picks up at a Sauk Centre area farm to Twin Cities customers. Earlier this month, state inspectors confiscated his products during his first delivery in St. Paul.
Under state law, raw milk can only be sold to customers directly from the farm where it’s produced. Schlangen tells the St. Cloud Times that he’s doing nothing illegal. Health officials say the unpasteurized milk can contain harmful bacteria.
