Mystery Of 123-Year-Old Wis. Tombstone Solved

RACINE, Wis. (AP) -- A tombstone dating back to 1888 that mysteriously appeared in a Racine driveway last year will soon be returned to its rightful spot.

Descendants of Henry Fenske say the marker had been missing from his Kenosha County grave for over 50 years.

The 200-pound gravestone turned up last year when someone spotted it in a driveway 20 miles away.

Police couldn't figure out where it came from or locate Fenske's descendants, so they finally asked the community for help. A weekend story in The Journal Times of Racine prompted a flood of responses, and word finally reached 73-year-old Russell Fenske Jr. of Somers. Henry Fenske was his great-grandfather.

Russell Fenske and his wife picked up the tombstone Monday. They say it was a shock to hear it was found, but now it's heading home where it belongs.
