Man Released From Death Row Accused Of Threats

BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) -- A Minnesota man, released from death row in Ohio, is back behind bars.

Kenneth Richey is accused of threatened staff at the Crow Wing County detox center. Police say an intoxicated Richey was taken to the detox center in Brainerd Saturday night. Officers were called back to the center after staff members reported the threats. The 46-year-old Richey is being held in the Crow Wing County Jail.

It's not the first time Richey is accused of making threats. He was charged last year with threatening and assaulting his 25-year-old son at their Baxter home. Those charges were recently dismissed without prejudice, giving prosecutors the option of refiling charges.

Richey spent more than 20 years on death row in Ohio for setting a fire that killed a 2-year-old girl. A federal appeals court ruled in 2007 that Richey's lawyers mishandled his case. The Brainerd Daily Dispatch says Ohio planned to retry him, but Richey was released after pleading no contest to leaving the girl in harm's way.
