NEW YORK (WCCO/AP) — Infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left fibula, the Minnesota Twins announced Thursday.

The heralded Japanese import was injured at Yankee Stadium Thursday when Nick Swisher slid into him at second base while breaking up a double play in the seventh inning. He had to be helped off the field, barely putting weight on the leg.

He will be evaluated by Dr. John Steubs in Minnesota Friday.

To replace Nishioka on the roster, the Twins announced they will recall infielder Luke Hughes from Triple-A Rochester. Hughes has a .270 career batting average in 598 minor league games.

The Twins signed Nishioka to a three-year, $9.25 million deal in December. He was 0 for 4 with a strikeout Thursday to drop his average to .208.

Nick Swisher needs some SERIOUS chin music, the guy is and always has been an arrogant jerk and a highly unethical ball-player. There is a difference between ‘trying to break-up’ a double play or ‘going-in hard’ and the Swisher way of trying to hurt someone. He should be suspended until Nishioka can play again…period.

All Damn Yankees are jerks. I agree suspend him and fine him, hell they got the money.

I watched the game and it looked like Swisher went into second with the intention of taking out Nishioka. I feel it was a DIRTY play and Swisher should be fined and suspended.

Imagine if Kubel slid into second and took out Cano or Jeter in the same way. How much fun would it be to read all the crying from the Yankee fans.

UPDATE: Can you believe it?? Gradenhire said “It was a clean play and Swisher is a clean player.” No wonder he can only win in a weak sister division..manager of the year????…About as deserving as Obamas Nobel Prize for Nothing. This guy won’t even protect his own players…bet he is hoping for a yankee job when the Twins finally realize he couldn’t coach Little League without a great supporting staff. Bigger Jerk then Swisher. Re-Plays show Swisher didn’t even start his slide until he was at the bag and he hop-stepped so as to be able to kick Nikki in the leg….time for a bounty….a big bounty! Can’t decide whether it should be on Swisher or Gardy…maybe two bounties??

They’ll probably baby him for years now, like they are doing with Mornieu

Fun Guy, Morneau had a concussion!!!!!! Not something to take lightly when you’re dealing with a brain injury!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nishi had a weakness in spring training when turning a double play. He would not clear out or jump over a sliding base runner. He was told that unless he learned to get out of the way, he would get “killed” at second. Today he did not get killed but he did break a bone. Maybe when he gets back in action he will work on the technique.
