Twins Home Opener Is Finally Here!

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Twins are set to take on the Oakland Athletics Friday for their first home game this season.

It's the sophomore year for Target Field, and Holly Wagner reported on some of the improvements that have been made at the stadium for the 2011 season, though even skeptics would have to admit that the venue left little room for improvement.

"What we are working on this year is the agony of success," said the Twins' executive director of public affairs Kevin Smith. "How do you top magical 2010?"

Smith said they focused on little improvements for the 2011 season. There's a new high-definition video board in right field for the fans sitting in left field, a new 100-foot LED tower right next to the board that will show video and graphics.

The Twins also added more heaters, so fans will be able to stay warm on those cool day and night games in both the infield and outfield stands.

"Twi-Fi" is new too. Fans will be able to access free Wi-Fi at Target Field.

"Turn the switch on and see what happens," said Smith.

But first you have to get there to see the improvements. Kerry McNally was on hand to cover all the things you need to know to make your trip into downtown Minneapolis as smooth as possible.

Those driving in should know that parking structures A, B and C are all directly accessible from 394 and First Avenue, and all connect to Target Field via the skyway. Smith said they hardly ever fill up.

Metro Transit has 12 bus routes that stop at or near Target Field, including the Twins Express Route 679, which leaves the 394 and County Road 73 park and ride lot in Minnetonka every 15 minutes in the two hours leading up to game time.

And, of course, there are also plenty of trips into town on the Hiawatha and Northstar rail lines.

Lastly, for those of you whose wallets are open, there are plenty of shopping options inside and out of Target Field. Holly Wagner looked at some of the new fashion trends available inside the Twins Pro Shop.

Among them are a torn-looking Jennifer Beals-style sweatshirt and a Twins yarmulke.
