Candle Caused Winona Fire That Injured 2

WINONA, Minn. (AP) -- A candle left burning overnight caused a fire that left seven Winona State University students homeless and injured two others.

Assistant Winona Fire Chief Chief Jim Multhaup tells KAGE radio the candle was left burning on a dining room table on the first floor and caused the fire around 6:05 a.m. Saturday.

He credited Winona Police Sgt. Dave Allen with pulling the home's owner, Bill Styba from the burning structure as firefighters arrived. He lived on the first floor.

Styba was treated and released at a local hospital for smoke inhalation. Multhaup says one firefighter had a cut on the hand and received three stitches.

The seven students are being housed in a Winona State dormitory.
