Spring Cleaning: Disposing Of All That Junk

By Kerry McNally, WCCO-TV

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — If you are considering a major cleanup project in and around your home, there is a convenient and affordable way to throw out thousands of pounds of junk without the hassle of an unsightly dumpster.

Waste Management of Minnesota has created a cost-effective way for anyone to properly dispose of over a ton of stuff: The Bagster.

"You can keep it at home and do spring cleanup, clean out your closets, clean out the garage," explained Waste Management marketing director Julie Ketchum. "Whenever it's convenient, then you make the call."

Convenience is one of the main reasons The Bagster has become so popular with homeowners and contractors.

"They're convenient, it keeps the job site real neat and clean," said contractor Jim Nelson, who is such a fan that he has Bagsters delivered on day one with all of the building supplies.

You can fill them up with just about anything -- sheet rock, plywood, doors, windows, even a bathtub. The receptacle is 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 2.5 feet tall. It will hold up to 3,300 pounds.

The space age material is porous so if it rains it won't hold water.

"They're small. They're not like a big metal container," said Nelson. "Sometimes customers are worried about the damage to their driveway and stuff like that, or their yard when the dumpsters are put in."

Setting the Bagster up is a snap, like setting up a tent without the hassle of the poles or stakes. You simply take it out of the bag, lay it on the ground, fold the sides over and fill 'er up.

You then call Waste Management or log on to their website to arrange for a pickup. Unlike the cable or satellite companies, you don't have to be home when they take it away and often times they arrive right when they say they will.

The Bagster retails for $29.95 and is available at home stores like Home Depot. Pickups run between $80 to $90 per bag here in the Twin Cities.
