Mauer Improving, Could Do Light Workout Sunday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Minnesota Twins star Joe Mauer is continuing to recover from a viral infection and could take part in a light workout Sunday.

Mauer has a viral infection and the team believes it increased the catcher's body soreness recently. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of leg weakness stemming from offseason arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

"He's staying at the hotel again today," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said before Minnesota's game at Tampa Bay Saturday. "He's feeling better. The plan is for him to join us (Sunday). Come to the ballpark and, maybe, do a little light stuff."

Mauer went to a hospital for evaluation and treatment Thursday night after suffering from extreme flulike symptoms. He received fluids and antibiotics and was discharged.

The three-time AL batting champion and 2009 AL MVP is scheduled for a follow-up visit to a specialist in Baltimore, which may take place Monday. The doctor treated a lower-back problem that put Mauer on the DL for a month in 2009.

Mauer is expected to start a rehab program in Minnesota. Gardenhire hopes Mauer can return in a couple weeks.
