MINNEAPOLS (WCCO) -- A Minnesota soldier supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan has lost his life Friday.

Spc. Joseph A. Kennedy, of St. Paul, was killed in Afghanistan's Helmand Province after suffering wounds inflicted from an enemy attack.

Kennedy's friends described him as outgoing, fun-loving and full of life. They went out Saturday night and celebrated his life and accomplishments.

He graduated from Simley Senior High in Inver Grove Heights in 2004. He was a wrestler and also enjoyed working on cars and riding motorcycles.

He enlisted in the United States Army in 2009 and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, Third Brigade Combat team with the 1st Infantry division out of Ft. Knox, Ky.

His friends said he was back in Minnesota earlier this year and went to visit his former teachers at Simley High.

Kennedy's mother, Valerie Kennedy, released this statement:

"We are deeply saddened by the lost of our son. Joe was a fine young man. He is our hero. He lived life with the volume turned up full blast. We are extremely proud of him and his service to our country. He will be missed by many that loved him dearly. We deeply appreciate the out pouring of support and prayers."

Kennedy's family asked for privacy as they grieve. WCCO-TV respected their wishes.
