WINONA, Minn. (AP) — A Wisconsin woman was critically injured when her minivan collided with a cow on a Minnesota interstate.

The Minnesota State Patrol says the van driven by 36-year-old Svetlana Schmitz, of La Crosse, hit the cow on Interstate 90 near Lewiston in Winona County about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. She was taken by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

A 62-year-old passenger, also from La Crosse, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated at St. Mary’s.

The Winona Daily News reports both were wearing seat belts.

to “open your eyes”… you are obviously not familiar with this stretch of “freeway” and it was 1030pm. don’t be so rude! you should hope an accident never happens to you or your family.

@ Melissa & Dave, I will have you know, I’m an over the road truck driver. I have been driving over the road for 18 years. I have never hit anything yet. I drive all hours of the day and night. So 10:30 pm has nothing to do with it. You just need to keep your eyes open and on the road. Hope these women are healing well.

    1. K. says:

Again, I ask, why was the cow on the freeway to begin with? Jumped a fence? Fell off a truck? What?

      1. Melissa says:

it’s not the typical freeway, pitch black at most points and it’s a very rural area, fence may have been broken or maybe no fence at all and the stupid cow just wandered too far.

  5. Jerry says:

I doubt the cow survived. The cow pictured is probably a file photo in case we were not sure what a cow looked like.

Too bad for the woman and the cow. You never know when your time is up.

Can tell a few of you don’t understand how interstates work out there! They ate not luke they are in the cities! Dark country roads… no (or very few) street lights… it was at 1030 PM! ‘Open your eyes’ you are very rude! Like Melissa said, you should hope a CRAZY accident like this ever happens to you and/or family! And CJ, all your worried about is the cow… REALLY!
My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of them!

To all of the negative comments left regarding the driver of the vehicle: GET A LIFE!! This woman and her family are suffering. She may never walk again. If you have ever been on I-90 at night you will realize it is pitch dark at night.. The driver is in no way responsible for the accident.

Does anyone know if there is a fund for Sveta? There are a few of us who went to BSN school with her that would like to reconnect and give what we can.
