Vandals Damage Granite Artwork In St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Vandals have damaged a large granite curbstone that was part of an art installation in a St. Paul park.

Resident Joe Landsberger believes someone chained the curbstone and pulled it down, possibly with a truck.

The historic curbstone was among 13 at the park near St. Paul's High Bridge. The artist, Craig David of St. Paul, tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press he will work to move the stone, but it won't be placed upright again.

David says the curbstones were probably hewn by hand in the 1880s and 1890s, and were used on St. Paul streets.

The toppled stone weighs at least 1,200 pounds and sustained about $3,000 in damage.

The artwork was dedicated in 2004.
