By Steve Murphy, NewsRadio 830 WCCO

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Minnesota Department of Health is out with a warning about unhealthy hair products. It involves certain hair-smoothing products used in treatments like Brazilian Blowouts.

“These products are fairly popular,” said spokesperson John Stieger.

He said the products, also referred to as keratin treatments, may contain formaldehyde.

“Formaldehyde can irritate the eyes, nose and skin. It can increase the risk of asthma and it’s also been linked to an increased risk of some types of cancer,” said Stieger.

Agencies such as Department of Health and OSHA are recommending that salon owners avoid using hair smoothing products with formaldehyde.

It also can make your hair fall out………..and leave you permanently bald. I saw that on another new show.

Sorry……..forgot the “s”……..I saw it on another News show.

I had my second one done yesterday. I did not have any of the irritations that are mentioned in the article. Maybe the more you pay, the better it is.

  3. Salon Junkie says:

There are also a lot of treatments out there that are formaldehyde free, so that may be what you were treated with , Nancy.

However, OSHA and many stylists have complained that there are very severe health consequences for stylists and customers alike – once stylist got a nose bleed in the middle of a treatment because she was so sensitive.

It’s always better to just be educated about it.
