MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Department of Health is out with a warning about unhealthy hair products. It involves certain hair-smoothing products used in treatments like Brazilian Blowouts.
"These products are fairly popular," said spokesperson John Stieger.

He said the products, also referred to as keratin treatments, may contain formaldehyde.
"Formaldehyde can irritate the eyes, nose and skin. It can increase the risk of asthma and it's also been linked to an increased risk of some types of cancer," said Stieger.
Agencies such as Department of Health and OSHA are recommending that salon owners avoid using hair smoothing products with formaldehyde.
