Southern Theater Could Close Without Help

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A popular Minneapolis theater is seeking the public's help to stay in business.

The Southern Theater, located at 1420 Washington Ave. S. in Minneapolis, needs $400,000 by April 30 or it faces the possibility of closing its doors.

Tough economic times over the past few years has put the theater in a financial "state of emergency." In a public-letter to theater-goers on the company's web site, the theater pleads for financial support from its friends and patrons.

The theater has made several changes over the past few months, but the company says it can only move forward with plans if it receives financial assistance. The theater has gone "green" to meet desired ecological standards and is trying to revive with Washington Ave. corridor between downtown Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota.

The Southern Theater has been in existence for 100 years, but they say it won't last much longer without the public's help.
