2 St. Paul Public Works Employees Hurt In Crash

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- Police are investigating a crash that seriously injured two employees of the St. Paul Public Works Department Tuesday morning.
The crash, which happened at about 11 a.m., occurred on Fairview Avenue South beneath the I-94 bridge, according to police.
A 91-year-old driver of a 2003 Buick Century struck two workers as they were picking up debris off the street, according to the preliminary investigation.
The workers' pickup truck was parked in front of them with its emergency hazard lights on.
"It appears at the scene that the public works vehicle that was stopped did have some emergency lights activated," said John Keating, St. Paul police spokesman.

Medics transported the workers to Regions Hospital with serious injuries. They have been identified as 41-year-old Craig Johnson Sr. of St. Paul and 35-year-old Thomas Haack of Mankato.
The driver has been identified as Mabel Schleif, 91, of St. Paul. Medics took her to the hospital for evaluation.
Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash and no citations have been issued at this time.
