Mpls. Ranked 4th Best Place For A Summer Trip

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- You won't have to go far to travel to one of the nation's top summer getaways. National Geographic Magazine ranked Minneapolis as one of its best summer trips of 2011.

The city ranked fourth on the list, which included 10 locations from around the world.

National Geographic said the arrival of warm weather in Minneapolis launches a June to August celebration of arts, music and culture.

The magazine pointed out the 17 farmers markets, Mall of America, and "fan-friendly" Target Field as other features that helped it make the list.

It told travelers to pick up a bike at the 'Nice Ride' kiosks around town and cruise the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway.

The metro area's 22 lakes and 57 museums also added to the high ranking.

National Geographic's number one summer destination is Muskoka Cottage Country in Ontario.

Patagonia, Argentina was number two, followed by the San Juan Islands in Washington.
