Rainy Weather Puts A Damper On High School Sports

By Esme Murphy, WCCO-TV

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The rain has not been our friend this spring.

The Twins had to cancel their game with the Rays on Tuesday, marking the second time they've had a rain cancellation this year -- and the season just started.

But the Twins aren't alone.

High school teams are having the same problem. The weather is putting a damper on games and practices.

At Edina High School, Athletic Director John Soma said this is far worse than last year.

"Last year, for example, we had to reschedule one game. Today alone, we rescheduled five, so it's a dramatic difference from years past," he said.

Even gym classes are taking a hit. Many physical education classes are usually held outside this time of year.

"They have been in here all winter long. They are ready to get outside and try something different," said gym teacher and softball coach Amy Gilbertson.

Student Reid Hirschey wishes the weather was better.

"I would rather be outside, for sure, it's so much nicer," she said.

Coaches are also having to fight each other for gym space.

"It's hard for us to get into gyms and find gym space because all the sports that are outdoor sports are looking for someplace to practice at that time," Gilbertson said.

The equalizer is that all teams in the state are affected because the weather is bad everywhere. If the bad weather continues and there has to be more cancellations in sports, like baseball and softball, it will affect tournaments and even potentially playoffs.
