Election Season Already Heating Up NE Minn.

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- The next congressional election is 18 months away, but you wouldn't know it listening to the radio or watching television around Duluth and the Iron Range.

Minnesota Public Radio reports political ads are flooding the airwaves to criticize and defend freshman U.S. Rep. Chip Cravaack's vote for the Republican budget plan.

One ad paid for by Americans United for Change, which is backed by labor unions, tells the audience Cravaack voted to end Medicare. At least two other left-leaning groups bought similar ads.

But the 60 Plus Association has come to Cravaack's defense with a $60,000 radio ad campaign. The group calls itself as the conservative alternative to the American Association of Retired Persons.

The Republican budget proposal would to eventually convert Medicare to a voucher-like program.
