New Phone App Lets Parents Track Their Teens

By Bruce Hagevik, NewsRadio 830 WCCO

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Some say it's the ultimate device for "helicopter parents," but others say it's a matter of safety.

Minneapolis based Eye Phone Group has come out with a phone app that allows parents to track where their teenager is driving and at what speed.

Eye Phone Group president Nathan Ooley says the app will immediately tell a parent if their child is speeding. Parents can also tell if their child has gone outside a pre-determined boundary while behind the wheel.

But the idea is not well received by all teenagers.

"Well I don't think parents should be allowed to do all that to figure out exactly where their kids are. They should be able to trust their own kid," said a student at Minneapolis South High School.

Other teenagers agreed that trust is a critical issue between parent and child, but some agreed it may be useful in some situations.

It's unclear if the app will be widely used. It's called SIPS which stands for "Safety Information Protection System."
