U Of M Boosts Enforcement For Spring Jam

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Police are stepping up enforcement as Spring Jam gets under way near the University of Minnesota.

The Minnesota Daily reports 14 events are expected to attract waves of students this weekend. The annual celebration was marred by a riot in 2009.

The University of Minnesota Police Department is staffing extra patrols and the Minneapolis Police Department is bringing in additional officers from outside the precinct to maintain control.

University police are collaborating with the Office for Student Affairs to check social media sites such as Facebook to ensure that authorities are aware if students are planning any big parties.

Earlier this week, university and city representatives toured area neighborhoods and reminded residents to keep their parties under control this weekend.
