WADENA, Minn. (AP) — The city of Wadena is commemorating Arbor Day weekend with a large-scale effort to restore a landscape decimated by last year’s tornado.

Thousands of trees were destroyed when the twister hit last June 17. On Saturday, groups of volunteers will spend the day planting trees purchased with donations and a Department of Natural Resources bonding grant.

A city once filled with mature trees now has bare spots where the tornado altered the landscape. Hundreds of Boy Scouts, Rotarians, Lions Club members and many other volunteers will work to fill those spaces with greenery.

The Brainerd Dispatch says what took minutes to destroy will take years to restore. But, organizers say Arbor Day weekend is a start.
