Metro Transit Workers OK New 2-Year Contract

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Metro Transit bus and rail operators have approved a new two-year contract that includes a wage freeze.

Members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1005 approved the proposal Monday. The Metropolitan Council says 78 percent of union members who turned out to vote over two days voted in favor of the new contract.

The union represents about 2,200 Metro Transit employees. The local also includes mechanics and clerical and technical employees.

In addition to a two-year wage freeze, the new agreement shares increases in insurance costs between union members and the Met Council, which operates Metro Transit. The agreement still needs Met Council approval.

The previous contract expired last July 31. The new agreement runs to July 31, 2012.
