Up to 8 Hospitalized After Pick-Up, Bus Collide In Downtown St. Paul

ST. PAUL (WCCO) — A pick-up truck slammed into a Metro Transit bus Wednesday morning, sending both vehicles into a building. As many as eight people were sent to the hospital.

The crash happened at the corner of Cedar and Sixth streets just after 9 a.m.

The bus involved was the Route 94 bus, according to Metro Transit spokesman John Siqveland.

“It sounds like about 10 (customers) on the bus,” Siqveland said. “Five or six of them were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, thank goodness.”

He said the bus driver was one of the people hospitalized.

Two people in the pick-up truck were hospitalized, also with non-life threatening injuries. Siqveland said the pick-up driver was cited by Metro Transit Police for careless driving and no proof of insurance.

The accident will be investigated by Metro Transit Police.

Hopefully it will be a thorough investigation. The buses continue to run red lights downtown and any driver has to be defensive against them.

rj: If you read the penultimate paragraph, it is stated that the pick-up driver was cited. Other accounts of this accident tell us that the pick-up driver ran a red light. In my experience, Metro Transit has provided reliable and safe transportation in both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul as well as the suburbs.

I attended a meeting today @ noon, where one of the passengers was on the bus at the time of the crash. The rider stated the pickup ran the light causing the accident, it was said that no one was seriously injured, as the bus was just coming off a red light and started rolling at about 15 MPH. Our Metro drivers rank high in the nation for safety.

People, please get a grip. Of all drivers out there on the roads, Metro Transit Bus Drivers get the most flack, yet, have the most responsibility. Nobody talks about how Southwest, Laidlaw, Fed-X, UPS, etc. drives. Driving is a shared responsibility by Everyone. For all those people who are negatively speaking about Metro Transit Bus Drivers… for 1 hour ,out on a bus route, put your feet in their shoes, your butt in their seat & your time for their dime… then come back an tell me wat your opinion is then. And as far as running red lights, who doesnt?
