Car Plunges Into Maple Grove Pond, No Injuries

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (WCCO) — A distracted driver ended up in a Maple Grove pond Wednesday night near the Arbor Lakes Mall.

A Maple Grove Police Officer said a young man was fumbling with his iPod while driving on Arbor Lakes Parkway.

He lost control of his car just west of Hemlock Lane, jumped the curb and went straight into the water, authorities said. When WCCO-TV’s crew got to the scene, the car was nearly fully submerged in the water, and the wiper blades were still running too.

The young man was able to get out of the small Toyota on his own and was not injured in the incident. The pond is only about four feet deep, according to police.

“That is sad. My heart breaks for that young man and his family. It’s not life or death, but still, it’s a difficult situation,” said Janet Bendickson, a Maple Grove resident who witnessed the accident.

Video from an eyewitness showed the car almost fully submerged, and the boy being interviewed by police.

  • The Soothsayer

This sounds like a hilarious comedy routine to me…

    • George Mumford

Why do bad things happen to stupid people?

  • Rob Hafermann

    Wake up and pay attention!

  • Al

    Fire Gardenhoser.

    • Ben

Al, you are too funny! Too bad you’re an imbecile.

  • law abiding

Dont people know that being distrated behind the wheel is illegal in the state of mn.

    • Spell Check

They should outlaw bad spelling too. “distrated”

      • Grammar

        They should outlaw grammar too.

  • Greg

    Ipod or life?
Let this be a fair warning to you.

  • Jackie

The witness said she was sad and felt bad for him and his family for having to deal with the situation, WHAT THE HELL?!?!?! She needs a reality check. and He shouldn’t have a drivers license. Keep dumb a**e* and the elderly off the roads.

    • dphilips

I hope you are elderly some day, and somebody yanks your license ,you hillbilly!

      • Jackie

PLEASE DO!!!!! I dont want to be the reason for anyone dying because I was too old and couldnt react fast enough or had bad eyesight. My aunt was killed be an elderly man who ran a red light cuz he didnt see the light turn yellow then red.
and if that make me a hillbilly, so be it.

  • Joy

Jackie, your comment is lacking in class in every possible way. It is clear that driving while being distracted has consequences and this story is a clear example of that, thankfully this young man survived to learn his own lesson.

“Judging a person does not define who they are. It defines who you are.”

    • MIke

Lacking in class? Jackie has a good point. The public should be safe from 91 year old drivers running into road workers, and this clown driving into a lake.
It won’t be so classless when one of these irresponsible souls kills one of your family members.

      • dphilips

I see more young drivers ,and baby boomers driving badly than I do elderly

      • Joy

Mike, I believe that a mature person is capable of making a point without using foul language. Yes, I believe that is classless. Obviously, the young man driving could have injured more people due to his mistake and in no way am I saying that there should not be consequences for such irresponsible behavior.

I also happen to have a master’s degree in gerontology, the study of aging, and find that when people stereotype, whether based on age, gender or race-it shows a lack of empathy. Everyone knows there are drivers on the road who should not be driving but we need to be careful not to categorize all driver’s, such as anyone who is elderly, as being incapable.

  • Stacie

“This is sad”? Please. How many times do people need to be reminded that once they are sitting behind the wheel, their attention should be on driving, and driving only. I’m sorry, there’s no sympathy from me on this one.

  • dphilips

Dont even get me started on the bad woman drivers

    • Mama J

      mama j
I have had my drivers license for 15 years and I have never caused an accident, been in an accident, had a speeding ticket not even a parking ticket. there are just as many bad Male drivers as there are female drivers. get over yourself.

  • red

men are so hot either either honey

    • peterbiltman33

      Liberal MN. women

  • red

    excuse the typo

  • red

why was this moron playing with his ipod anyhow? does his car not have a radio?

  • freighterman

I drive from coast to coast, and MN. has the worst drivers by far, especially the women

    • Mama J

      mama J
I take it you have never been to Florida. There was a study done and with getting class grades Florida got an F.

  • peterbiltman

I agree with you freighter Mn has the worst

    • nighthawk

Agreed these Minnesota girls are the worst drivers in the nation

  • Ruoari

This is a terrible thing to say about my own gender, but I agree about terrible women drivers. I thought for sure it was going to be a woman that plowed a car into a pond. I was a little surprised to hear that it was not.

    • Stacie

If I remember right, not so long ago, a young mom lost her life in that same area, possibly that same pond?

    • Dave

It did not surprise me when I saw a young male driver get out of the car and swim to shore. He sat in the car for the longest time babbling something (could not make out what he was saying) before he finally got out of the car. I hope that he learned a lesson for this and I am glad that no one was hurt.
