Census Finds Minnesota Is Graying

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- New census figures show that despite growing, youthful communities of immigrants, the state is getting older overall.

The median age in 2010 jumped to 37.4 -- two years older than that the 35.4 reported in 2000. State Demographer Tom Gillaspy says that will probably continue as baby boomers age into their retirement years.

The number of people 65 years old or older living the state increased by nearly 90,000 since 2000 and now accounts for 13 percent of the total population. Ten years ago, they were 12 percent.

Minnesota remains younger than Wisconsin, with a median age of 38.5 years, and Michigan at 38.9. North Dakota's median age was a bit younger than Minnesota's at 37 years.

The 2010 data for Iowa and South Dakota hasn't yet been released.
