RED LAKE, Minn. (WCCO) — A 21-year-old Red Lake man was indicted recently for allegedly sexually abusing two girls on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
Byron Keith Kingbird Jr. was charged on May 2 with one count sexual abuse of a minor and one count of abusive sexual contact. He was arraigned Friday in Minneapolis Federal Court.
The indictment alleges that between January and February 2009, Kingbird Jr. engaged in sexual contact with a girl under the age of 12. It also alleges that during the same time period, he engaged in a second sexual act with another girl between ages 12 and 16.
Court documents state that the Red Lake Tribal Police Department was notified of the complaint filed by one of the victims. During that investigation, the second victim came forward and reported the sexual contact to authorities.
If convicted on both offenses, Kingbird Jr. faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. His sentence, if convicted, will be determined by a federal district court judge.
