Remembering Killebrew

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) – Plans have been announced for memorial services for the late Minnesota Twins legend Harmon Killebrew.

The funeral service will be held on Friday morning in Arizona, where Killebrew lived at the time of his death. That service will be open to the public. There will be a private burial service the following Monday in Idaho, where he was born.

Twins communications manager Chris Iles said the Twins would be able to attend the Arizona funeral on Friday.  They are playing the Arizona Diamondbacks that evening in Interleague play.

There will be a public memorial service for baseball fans here in Minnesota on Thursday, May 26. That service is set for 7 p.m. at Target Field.

Killebrew passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 74. The former Twins player had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer last December.

Killebrew hit 573 home runs and made 11 All-Star appearances during his 22-year career, spent mostly with the Washington Senators and the Twins. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984 and was fifth on the career home run list when he retired in 1975 after one season with the Kansas City Royals.

Killebrew currently ranks 11th on the all-time homer list, and his eight seasons with 40 or more homers still is tied for second in league history to Babe Ruth.
