Some Twin Cities Non-Profits Report Too Many Volunteers
By Susie Jones, NewsRadio 830 WCCO
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Many of the Minnesota's unemployed workers are turning to volunteering to keep up their resume, and job skills. But many of them are being turned away.
Kristin Schurrer is president of HandsOn Twin Cities. She said the larger non-profits are seeing more of the problem.
"Those are the places that people call first, so they are getting a lot of volunteers." Schurrer said.
A survey of 350 members of the Minnesota Association of Volunteer Administrators found that last year, 25 percent were unable to keep up with people wanting to volunteer.
Schurrer said non-profits need to adjust to changing times.
"They have to be more receptive to volunteer needs" Said Schurrer.
She said that some of those non-profits are facing cuts, and they don't have the staff to handle the additional volunteers.
