Homes Evacuated After Gas Main Hit

FRIDLEY, Minn. (WCCO) -- A number of homes in Fridley, Minn. were evacuated Thursday afternoon after a gas main was struck.

The leak happened after an asphalt crew hit the gas main near 58th Avenue Northeast and 2 1/2 Street at about 11:30 a.m.

CenterPoint Energy reported they activated their emergency plan.

At least eight residential buildings were evacuated, and at least four of those were four-plexes. A spokesperson with CenterPoint Energy said about 120 customers lost gas service because of the incident. Repairs were expected to be made to the line by 6 p.m. Thursday, officials said.

The customers were expected to have gas restored in their homes and would be allowed back in their homes Thursday night.
