Minn. Driver Charged With Injuring 2-Year-Old Girl

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A St. Paul driver accused of striking and injuring a 2-year-old girl has been charged with criminal vehicular operation and driving while intoxicated.

Fifty-two-year-old Hamjatta Baba Fofana is scheduled to appear in court June 17.

Police responded April 10 to a report of a hit-and-run injury. The St. Paul Pioneer Press report says the victim was missing a quarter-sized piece of her scalp and was covered in dirt.

Prosecutors say the girl's mother saw Fofana hit the girl, and the father yelled at him to stop. The father ran to the driver's door and yanked on the car's emergency brake but he couldn't wrestle the keys away. They say the driver fled the scene.

Police found Fofana at home. They say he smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech.

A message left at Fofana's home Friday was not immediately returned.
