Rocker To Speak At Humphrey 100th Birthday Event

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- 1960's rocker Tommy James will speak at a fundraising luncheon Friday honoring the 100th anniversary of the birth of former Vice President Hubert Humphrey.

James and Humphrey became friends when the Minnesota Democrat asked the singer to join him on his 1968 campaign for president. Their friendship continued until Humphrey's death in 1978.

The luncheon will help raise money to build a memorial on the grounds of the Minnesota Capitol honoring Humphrey. Humphrey's son Skip -- who invited James -- and former Vice President Walter Mondale are hosting the event, which starts at noon at the Minneapolis Club.

Tommy James and the Shondells scored such hits as "I Think We're Alone Now," "Mony Mony" and "Crimson and Clover."
