ST. PAUL (WCCO) -- Every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke -- and every four minutes somebody dies of stroke.
The 10th Annual Strides for Stroke Walk held Sunday at Como Park in St. Paul is about raising money and awareness.
The number of strokes appears to be on the rise.
"One of the major reasons is probably because we're simply living longer. Another reason is because we have the ability to diagnose it more easily," said Dr. Ron Tarrel, neurologist at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Timely treatment is essential in stroke survival.
"But patients have to come in within an hour or two of their symptoms so that we can treat them within three hours," said Dr. Tarrel.
Classic symptoms of stroke include sudden onset of weakness, speech problems, vision impairment and headache.
Roughly 90,000 Minnesotans are stroke survivors.
