ST. PAUL (WCCO) — An Inver Grove Heights veteran finally got the recognition he deserves for his years in the service late Monday afternoon.

Jerry Grove, 88, served in France and Germany during World War II and in Korea during the Korean War.

Many of his records were destroyed in a fire back in the 1970s and it wasn’t until Monday that he was awarded the medals he earned.

Sen. Al Franken also surprised Grove with an honor that left him speechless. He gave him a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in his honor.

“I’d like you to have it from the people of Minnesota and the people of the United States for your service,” said Franken.

“Thank you,” Grove responded.

Franken awarded Grove with 10 medals, including the World War II victory medal and the Korea Service Medal with two bronze service stars.

A lot of Veterans Records were distroyed in St Louis in the early 1970s

Those were VA records that were destroyed, not military records.

Congratulations Mr. Grove from another Combat Veteran.

I do have one comment however. Not to detract from Mr. Grove’s day, but Mr. Groves family, the senator and others showed up appropriately dressed for this important presentation and event. But for some reason, we always seem to get someone like the person in the background dressed in a t-shirt, plastic vest, and a stars and stripes dew-wrap (which, by the way, is extremely disrespectful to the flag). Enough of this disrespect. If you can’t show up dressed as a respectful adult, stay home! I’m a combat-wounded Vietnam Veteran, well-decorated, and have a lot of pride in the service of Veterans and members of the Armed Forces. I would NEVER show up in such an anti-establishment attire as that person. Have some respect for Mr. Grove!
