Hundreds Participate In Bike Walk To Work Day

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Whether it's a regular occurrence or something their trying out for the first time this week, hundreds of Minnesotans are taking part in Bike Walk to Work Day.

Minneapolis is the No. 1 bicycling city in the nation and 2010 numbers show biking is up 33 percent in the Twin Cities.

Hennepin County web content writer Brian Lieb enjoys biking to work downtown everyday.

"You get to work and you've already got your workout in for the day and at the end of the day, the stress of the day is gone when you get home," Lieb said.

Chuck Laszewski is the media coordinator for the Hennepin County Attorney's Office and has biked to work for more than 30 years.

"I like the exercise a lot, I like seeing the scenery and obviously it's saving me a lot of money on gas and parking so I've always done it," Laszewski said.

Deputy Hennepin County Attorney Pat Diamond has been biking to work for nearly a decade and enjoys taking it all in.

"Part of the fun is that when you're on your bike you get to experience what the weather is like all the time and you start to become aware of it.  Instead of waking up checking some other source to see what the weather is like you go outside in it and it becomes part of your life," Diamond said.

Some would question how those who have a strict dress code at their workplace manage to bike or walk to work and still be presentable, but all three men agree it's not an issue.

"If it's a really hot day and I really want to bike, I'll find a shower. Whether it's at the fitness center across the street or in a locker room," Lieb said.

"I have a garment bag that fits over the back of my bike so I'll put my suit and shirt and stuff in there," Diamond said.

Celebration breakfasts are being held in honor of Bike Walk to Work Day at REI Bloomington, the Hennepin County Government Plaza and at Rice Park Thursday morning.
