Minn. DNR: Fish Caught By Wis. Angler Not A Record

ELY, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota wildlife officials say a silver-phase northern pike caught this week by a Wisconsin angler may have been huge, but it won't be an official state record.

Linda Erickson-Eastwood is a fisheries program manager with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. She says the DNR used to keep records for silver pike, but no longer recognizes it among record fish because that color phase isn't a distinct species.

Mark Plumley of St. Croix Falls, Wis., caught his silver-phase pike Wednesday on Snowbank Lake near Ely. It tipped the scales at 18 pounds, 14.56 ounces.

The last Minnesota record for what was then called a silver pike was 18 pounds, 14 ounces. A Duluth News Tribune report says that fish was caught in 1978 on Disappointment Lake near Ely.
