Man Gets 30 Years In Burnsville Home Invasion

HASTINGS, Minn. (WCCO) – A 22-year-old Prior Lake man was sentenced Thursday in connection with a 2008 Burnsville home invasion that left a 52-year-old man badly burned and stabbed several times.

Shaquen Perril Whitfield was sentenced Thursdayin Dakota County District Court to more than 30 years in prison with credit for time already served. Whitfield was convicted last November of first-degree burglary, first-degree murder and first-degree arson.

According to a criminal complaint, a 52-year-old man who owned a Burnsville townhome was attacked in a home invasion on May 11, 2008. He was stabbed three times in the face and head and 17 times in the back. The invaders set fires in eight different locations, disabled smoke alarms, turned on gas burners and fled.

They left the victim to die and stole his car. The victim was somehow able to escape from the house, ran to a neighbor's home and called police. The criminal complaint states that the victim did not know the attackers.

Police later found blood at the scene identifying Whitfield as one of the invaders.  He pleaded guilty in June of 2009 to all three charges. Irvin Scott Cook was also sentenced to 29 and-a-half years in prison back in May on four felony charges in connection with the incident.
