Rep. Kline Co-Sponsors Charter School Bill

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The next step in a proposed overhaul of the No Child Left Behind education law has been introduced in the U.S. House and it's co-sponsored by Rep. John Kline, R-Minn.

The bill would encourage states to support the development and expansion of successful charter schools. It would also increase federal support for improving the quality of existing charter schools.

Kline is the chairman of the House education committee. The lead author of the bill is Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.

The charter schools bill is the second in a series of bills that Kline says will reform the nine-year-old No Child Left Behind law, which is widely regarded as flawed.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan wants the bills done by the time class resume in the fall and has said he would grant schools waivers if Congress drags its feet.
