3 Killed In Father's Day Weekend Crash

LINDSTROM, Minn. (WCCO) -- Authorities have confirmed that three people were killed in a two-vehicle crash early Friday night in Lindstrom.

The Chisago County Sheriff's Office received a report of a crash at about 6:07 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Olinda Trail and Morgan Avenue.

According to a 911 dispatcher, one vehicle was traveling southbound and one vehicle was traveling northbound at the time of the collision. Three people died at the scene, and two victims were taken to the hospital by a helicopter.

The Chisago County Sheriff's Office said that a 2002 Ford van being driven by a 68-year-old woman from Marine on St. Croix crossed the center line and struck a 2000 Toyota van head-on. The van was being driven by 52-year-old Bart Izaac Hazlett from St. Anthony. Three of his children were in the car at the time of the crash. Authorities identified them as 15-year-old Zoe Felix Hazlett, 11-year-old Olivia Roy Hazlett and 9-year-old Roan Huy Hazlett.

The 68-year-old woman was taken to Region's Hospital by helicopter and is currently listed in serious condition.
The sheriff's office said Bart Hazlett, Olivia Hazlett and Roan Hazlett were all pronounced dead at the scene. Zoe Hazlett was taken to Region's Hospital and eventually transferred to Gillette Children's Specialty Health Care, where she is listed in fair condition.

"I started the morning shrieking, crying that my friend was dead and two of his kids," said close family friend and Twin Cities musician Curt Almsted.

Almsted used to play in bands with Bart Hazlett decades ago and he refers to Hazlett by his nickname Buck.

"Hardworking, diligent, wonderful," Almsted described Hazlett. "Perfect as they say. Perfect family. Everyone that knows him and the kids, they were so sweet and adorable, they will be remembered forever and never forgotten."

Bret Hazlett, Bart Hazlett's brother, said that Bart leaves behind his wife and another daughter.

Bret and Bart Hazlett started a restaurant together called Maverick's in Roseville, Minn.

Almsted says his heart breaks for the Hazlett family, especially considering the crash happened on Father's Day weekend.

"I lost a child 25 years ago, it is the worst thing that can happen," Almsted said. "For everybody has a dad that is living, let them know you love them."

The Chisago County Sheriff's Office said it doesn't believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but they will wait for toxicology results. Investigators also say everyone in the crash was wearing a seatbelt.

"It's a horrendous situation. I feel very bad for the family and anybody who is close to them and who knows them as well," said Deputy Chief Chad Worden of the Chisago County Sheriff's Office.

The Minnesota State Patrol and the Chisago County Sheriff's Office both said the accident remains under investigation.
