Bachmann Says She Misspoke On Wayne’s Hometown

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is acknowledging “misspeaking” occasionally, including wrongly claiming that actor John Wayne was from her Waterloo, Iowa hometown, but says she’s “a substantive, serious person” who would be a good president.

Bachman, who announced her candidacy on Monday, flubbed her hometown history in a weekend interview in which she declared “John Wayne was from Waterloo” and “that’s the kind of spirit that I have, too.”

The actor was born nearly 150 miles away. It was the serial killer John Wayne Gacy Jr. who lived, for a time, in Waterloo.

The GOP congresswoman told CNN on Tuesday her comments “were just misspeaking” and that her main intent was to show she identified with Wayne’s patriotism.

“I wish I could be perfect,” Bachmann said. “I’m a substantive, serious person” who has “good sense on how to turn the economy around” as president.

Of course they are. But they’re not scared at all of bankrupting the government Greece style. Obama tripled Bush’s already too big budget deficit, now he’s out of checks and wants more, whether or not there’s money in the account. That’s a lot scarier to some of us than not raising the debt limit. If we raise it yet again they’ll never stop. They’ll just keep asking for more.

    • larry

Just another tea party racist or was that patriot…..

      • Kevin

Wow….where did wonder boy Rico state he was part of the Tea Party? Larry you are just anohter liberal moron who jumps to conclusions and fears the Tea Party movement……every racist must be a Tea Party member……your an idiot!

        • larry

Hey Kevin, I do not believe every racist is a tea party member.

    • Abby Normal

Wow, now that’s a reportable comment.

    • lefty

rico go back to south america since you have no idea how this country works moron just like bachmann

      • Rico Suave

I know exactly how it works. Spend until we hit the debt ceiling, than raise the limit rather than quit spending. Pretty simple really. A child could understand this. Even you could.

        • Tom

          @ Rico Suave

How did your party the GOP pay for the following: Medicare Part D ? Two tax cuts? Two wars? Etc? Did they pay for those things? Or put them on the card?

      • Chris

@ Lefty… Take just a second to imagine if you are wrong on that point…
Is that the kind of gamble you are willing to take? Let’s take control of our future instead of claiming to be victims all the time!

        • Real Talk

News Flash: You couldnt take control of your future if you tried.

The super rich have designed this system to keep the middle class at bay. They divided us into two parties and sit back and watch the bickering start. Mean while, everyone is so riled up about partisan politics….no one is paying attention to the super rich changing the rules of the game to line their own pockets. Do you think the market crash of ’08 was an unavoidable series of coincidences adding up at the right moment?

So the only way to “take control” of our future is invent a time machine and go back about 35 years. Otherwise, the game as already been set up and played 3/4th the way through…..there is no starting over until the music stops. Good luck Chris!!!!

    • Todd Illig

Obama did not triple the Bush deficit. This is a lie that has been repeated so many times people believe it. The Bush administration was not counting the money spent in Iraq and afghanistan in their budget. Had they been doing this their last two deficits would have topped a trillion dollars.

      • J

        uh huh…sure

      • Charlie

        Yeah, sure….

        • Abby Normal

This is true. The wars were not tallied into the overall deficit. Bush used creative accounting, much like what was done at Enron and on Wall Street.

    • therightisalwayswrong

Obama did NOT triple Bushs’ absurd deficit, clown. He put Bush’s illegal wars on the books, as they should’ve been all along. 90% of our current deficit can be attributed to two things: Bushs’ illegal wars of aggression and his idiotic, ill-advised tax welfare handouts to millionaires. Eliminate those two items and launch an alternative energy initiative and we not only slash unemployment, but we erase the deficit overnight.

      • Tom

        @ therightisalwayswrong

        That is all true!

  • Sick of Bachmann

    Let the lies begin.

  • Stanm

    Senator Obama quote from 2006
“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure,” he said on March 16, 2006. “Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership . Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.”

  • Kooks like this

gotta say this and then listen to ya’ll bicker
until the parties F%#KING cease this confrontational game and start to actually work together to save this damn country FROM THEM — you will see the newest and largest of the former global powers wilt and die on the vine within the next 20-25 years.
MB is as big of a friggen farce as Obama. Where Obama comes out a wee bit ahead is he usually thinks before he speaks and acts…not always right by my thinking but he thinks.
MB is like a unstable vial of nitro …. and she indeed could set this country back to the days of the dinosaurs.
I won’t bother commenting on Obama’s 2006 quote but be careful what you setting yourself up for as MB has taken the retraction concept need(s) to new levels never seen. ;-)
Come on Mitt or someone – start to shine as we need someone

  • Alfred

Do NOT raise the debt limit. It’s like giving more drugs to an addict. If the feds need more money they can close the National Endowment for the Arts, the Department of Education, the EPA, HUD, etc., etc., etc.

They had plenty of money and they wasted it.

Raising their credit would allow them to avoid the consequences of their irresponsible spending.

    Tough Love.

  • Citizen

The debt limit was raised 14 times for Bush II.

    • StraycatStrut

OBummer tripled the National Debt it in his first 3 months “acting” as President.. Wake up Citizen you are way off base and misleading per usual.

      • Les Johnson

Don’t let the fact that you don’t know what you’re talking about stop you from vomiting lies all over every online location you can find. Right?

Don’t worry, just because I’m onto you doesn’t mean anybody else is.

  • Citizen

Sorry. My statistics were too low on the 14 times. The GOP raised the debt ceiling 19 times (and added over $4 trillion worth of debt) under George W. Bush and not once did they hold the president hostage to debt ceiling negotiations.

    • therightisalwayswrong

Actually, it was 10 times, and the debt was doubled by BushCheneyCorp and the GOP, from roughly $5.5 trillion to roughly $11 trillion, although if the two illegal wars of aggression had been added to the budget, as they should’ve been all along, the debt that the republICONs buried the nation with is very close to $14 trillion and rising.

  • U Betcha

Come on GOP please dump that fruitcake MB and find someone else. I am a conservative that wants less government and less false religion in my life.

    • Kevin

Please define why she is a fruitcake and what is “false religion”?

      • quentin

Kevin: Not my words, but I’ll give it a shot. “False religion”: believes the whole silly fundamentalist, biblical thing from the ark with two of every species to the Rapture.. Means she can’t meaningfully and rationally process information. “Fruitcake”: should be evident; should not require further explanation.

  • Bill Brown

Bachmann is really lost, she should never have been elected to any office. What we need at al levels are good democrats.

    • Kevin

Please define why she is “really lost”. Also your be better off with “We need good Democrats at all levels”……..

  • bikjon

I much prefer Ted Bundy as president. His economic policies are more market based then Gacy’s.

    • morris

Also, Ted recycled and composted. Gacy kept everything under his house.

    • Jake

If only Ed Gein had taken care of those public employee collective bargaining issue in Wisconsin when he had a chance . . . .

      • morris

Jake: He had no skin in that game.

  • StraycatStrut

Its amazing how all the important things come out from the far out left on anything in print..

    • U Betcha

Shut up and drink your koolaid.

      • Slim

        OK… thirsty?

  • joe

All those white guys look the same to me too, sister.

    • Abby Normal

Once you start using derogatory remarks to describe your fellow human beings, you’ve lost all your arguments.

    • StraycatStrut

Not my Post……. the left at goofy junk again…… just like their leadership

  • therightisalwayswrong

Funny, but the republiCONs had no problem whatsoever with raising the debt limit a staggering 10 times for BushCheneyCorp. Nary a peep from the teabagger morons then. Now, suddenly, when Obama puts the two illegal bush wars on the books, the wingnuts are refusing to raise the debt limit. Fine. Hang the upcoming econoimc collapse around their necks, then. They’ve done nothing but stand in the way ever since 2008, so let’s just let them have their way, and collapse the economy, so that the American public learns their lesson once and for all, and votes the dangerously anti-American republiCONs out of power FOREVER in 2012.

  • Mike Merker

Bachmann misspoke in one of Obamas 57 states!

  • Rep. Michele Bachmann

I always mis-speak and I always get away with it. I am a dumb person so I should be president of the USA. NOT but, yes… you are dumb and STUPID..

  • jjht

She always “mistates” and never has the data to back anything up. She states that she created jobs–where? Until they get people back to work, a direct link to the BUSH failure with the financial sector, we are not going to get ahead of anything. I guess that as long as she continues to get her government check–she has used the government for support for years–she took in foster kids–whould she have without being paid? What about those kids now? I think those who are in impossible situations –by not fault of their own- are now off her radar. She is a mouthpiece with no substance.

  • Carl

“Michele Bachmann has the worst record of making false statements of any of the leading contenders.” — Politifact So is she lying or badly informed?

She also believes Armageddon is inevitable and a good thing. Let’s keep her finger as far from the proverbial button as possible.

Praise Jebus, God hates a well informed citizenry, Amen.

  • U Betcha

Faith is convincing yourself something is true when you know it isn’t so.
I get very nervous when someone says they discussed an important question with God and he told them what to do. It makes me think they are delusional. Michele Bachmann wants to teach Creationism in public schools, she believes the Earth is 6000-10000 years old, no such thing as Evolution, and Global Warming is a hoax. She will set this country back 300 years in basic science. She will be a disaster.

    • Kevin

      Your a moron!

      • Chuck

@ Kevin… who are you addressing and what is your point?

    • Slim

U Betcha… Let me tell you a little secret: YOU ARE WRONG!!!

      Thank you.

  • Bryson Powers

This woman shows how nuts the GOP has become. That she could even be CONSIDERED as a candidate for president is shocking.

    • Kevin

Please define why you believe the GOP is nuts. The GOP has not nominated MN for anything. And please let us know why you are shocked that she is a candidate for the President?

  • Cycle409

    I agree with Bill Brown:

“What we need at al levels are good democrats.” problem is there are no “good” democrats at any level.

    • Bill Brown

      Almost true what you say,,,,,

Just a few good ones right now, Dennis of Ohio, Barry of Vermont, Al of Minnesota, just to name three. State level, i still like John Marty. And Mark as Gov hold in there Buddy….let the GOP crash.

  • Citizen

Mark Twin said it best: “I am not a Republican. I belong to no organized political party, I am a Democrat.”

    • StraycatStrut

Who’s Mark Twin? And who cares?

  • D

Lies Lies Lies, Sensational Lies!!! Thats M.Bachmann’s Platform!!

The Lying Republican. I know this because she ran against a woman in Minnesota for the Senate seat and Lied Lied Lied about her. Awful Liar.

    • Kevin

Please define the lies? What woman did she run against? And what did she “lied, lied, lied” about?

      • Abby Normal

“Obama’s trip to India is costing America $200 million a day.” “The founding fathers ended slavery.”

    • Cycle409

Nice comment “D”, made all the sence in the world. You should think about running for office as a dem, your logic is profound. Well not really but it would be fun to listen to babble.

      • Bill Brown

” Sence ” is a river in England. I goofed too about spelling “all” , I had only ” al democrats “…so don’t feel too bad that you make no sense.

    • Reasonable

Anybody that doesn’t know that John Wayne (or Marion Morrison rather) wasn’t from the same town as they were is unamerican and should be investigated by congress!

Thank you for entering into the presidential ring Michelle. We can only hope that you hold onto this fantasy long enough to both not get the nomination, but to also not be able to run for re-election of your congressional seat as you’ve proven yourself to be completely worthless.

  • Bachman Misspoke On John Wayne Reference « CBS Minnesota

[…] likely hear this flub at the water cooler today: Bachmann mispoke yesterday when she wrongly claimed that actor John […]

  • Youseff

Marion Morrison was John Wayne’s real name. He couldn’t even use his REAL name as an actor, just as fake as Bachman.

  • Carl

“The actor was born nearly 150 miles away. It was the serial killer John Wayne Gacy Jr. who lived, for a time, in Waterloo.”

Typical. Michele tends confuse sociopathy with patriotism.
