Charges: Woman Fought Off Attacker With Rock

ST. PAUL (WCCO) -- A St. Paul man is charged with attempting to sexually assault a woman in an alley.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim was walking along the 300 block of Sherburne Avenue in St. Paul early Monday morning when she came upon a man locking a bike up to a fence.

The man said something to her, but she didn't hear what.

With a few minutes, the man had snuck up on her and grabbed her from behind. He had her in a chokehold, the criminal complaint says.

The victim told police she fought back and hit her attacker in the face with a rock. At that point he stopped and walked away.

The victim noticed her attacker had dropped his wallet and keys, and presented them to police. As a result, they apprehended 29-year-old Cha Yang at a nearby mission.

He told police he didn't have his wallet with him because he had left it at a friend's house the previous night.

He is now charged with second-degree attempted criminal sexual assault and kidnapping. Both are felony offenses.
