2 Fatal Accidents Reported On 'Maroon Day'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota State Patrol was busy over "Maroon Day" on Thursday, which is statistically the deadliest driving day of the year leading up to the Fourth of July weekend.

The state patrol reported two fatal accidents out of 92 total crashes. A 53-year-old Savage man died in a motorcycle accident on Highway 169 near County Road 18. A 21-year-old man also died after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Highway 169 in Onamia. There were also 21 injury accidents of the 92 reported.

There were also 3,498 traffic stops with 22 DWI arrests.

Nearly 600 troopers were on patrol in an effort to increase their presence on highways, which is historically the deadliest day on Minnesota roads.

Since 2000, more fatal crashes occurred on June 30 than any other day of the year, with 32 fatal crashes and 37 deaths.
