Twins Honor Troops With ‘Seats for Soldiers,’ Pregame

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Not much is more American than a hot dog and outdoor baseball game.

So it’s no surprise the Minnesota Twins and their fans wanted to take Saturday to salute the troops on Armed Services Appreciation Day.

Photojournalist Tony Peterson was there to capture the excitement.

Twins fans saluted veterans, and those that gave their lives in battle were honored on the big screen.

“I think it’s important to that on this Independence Day holiday that we take a moment to really just step away from the barbecue, the boats, the fishing and the skiing and really pay homage to what this day means,” said Kevin Smith, the Twins executive director of public affairs.

Many season ticket holders and suite owners donated their tickets to military families so they could enjoy Saturday’s game.

According to the Twins, U.S. Bank donated 1,000 ticket to active and retired service members.

As a member of the military for 29 years I have a question for the young man at 1:49…. You are in uniform on a state-wide network, wearing your purple heart, and you couldn’t shave that ridiculous goatee?? Where is your pride in your military appearance? Even if you are no longer in the service, surely a member of the airborne corps would have the pride in his appearance to shave before going out in front of a crowd of 45,000.

As the mother of that young man, he is on con-leave after having a cornea transplant just 10 days earlier and with only one usable hand give him a break. He is on leave from his hospital stay at Walter Reed where they do slack a little as far as hygene is concerned as it is more important to be able to do daily activities like dress himself, and tying his shoes are big accomplishments. Have you ever tried to get ready for something with one hand? one eye? AND BEING A PROUD ARMY ARIBORNE SOLDIER???? I am ashamed of your support for our wouned warriors GO TO WALTER REED AND REPEAT THESE WORDS!!!!
