USDA To Resurvey Farmers In 4 States This Month

FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is taking the unusual step of resurveying corn, soybean and wheat farmers in four states.

USDA's late-June acreage report usually is the final word on planted acres of various crops in the nation. But when farmers were surveyed in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana in early June for the report that came out last week, a large number of acres remained to be planted because of wet conditions. That means farmers had to guess.

USDA says it will resurvey those farmers in July and if warranted, publish updated estimates in August.

Such revisions are uncommon, though USDA did it for official production numbers for small grains in the falls of 2010 and 2009.
