Police Arrest Fugitive Level 3 Sex Offender

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO)-- A level 3 sex offender who police said went on the lam earlier this week has been apprehended.

Gregory Lewis Smith, 59, somehow cut off his GPS ankle bracelet and took off on Tuesday. He had last been seen at the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis.

Officers got a tip that Smith was at a residence in south Minneapolis.

He was apprehended by Minneapolis Police and Department of Corrections officers at about 7 p.m. Thursday.

Smith has two previous sexual assault convictions in Illinois and was on intensive supervised release in Hennepin County for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.
