MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Delta Air Lines Inc. is looking to drop money-losing flights in 24 small cities, putting some of them at risk of losing air service altogether.

Delta says it has been losing $14 million a year on the flights, which are concentrated in the nation’s midsection in cities like Thief River Falls, Minn., and Waterloo, Iowa. Some flights are only 12 percent full on average. Many are on Saab turboprop planes, which Delta is retiring.

Federal subsidies help pay for flying in 16 of the cities. Other airlines can bid for those subsidies if Delta pulls out. The airline says it will ask for federal subsidies in the other eight cities. It said it can’t afford to keep flying to those cities without a subsidy.

Waterloo? Isn’t that where John Wayne is from?

Are we surprised? Delta is just another “big business” that picked up NWA and is shedding all it losing routes and moving all business out of the state. I hope Minnesota holds them to the 500 million dollar loan that is due the State.

Delta is not a “class carrier” and is cheap, cheap, cheap with employees, but high, high, high with patrons of the airline. Have you ever seen a “discount” fare out of the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport since Delta took over?

I can get a cheaper fare to Minneapolis on KLM anytime over the same route by Delta. I booked a fare recently from Europe to San Francisco, on to Minneapolis/St. Paul and back to Europe (stop-over in San Francisco and Minneapolis) for $600. less than a single r/t from Europr to Minneapolis/St. Paul!

Delta needs to be run out of the state and let a “real airline” take over.

    P. S. I loved the Waterloo line in the previous comment!

Remember, it was the State Public employees pension that bailed them out with that loan. They better pay that pension fund back. Just shows what corruption there is in the private sector.

I think this story shows some pretty lackluster reporting by someone. Too lazy to even put a link where the list of affected cities can be found. So I did it for you 😉

Wonder what it would take to get them to stop flying to 24 additional large cities? It’s a start people.
