Man Gets Nearly 13 Years In Shooting Of Mpls Girl

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The teen who shot Guadalupe Galeno Hernandez in Minneapolis last November was sentenced Friday in Hennepin County District Court.

Marlon Montano will spend nearly 13 years in prison for firing the shots that nearly killed Hernandez, an innocent bystander in a drive-by shooting. Instead, she is now paralyzed. Montano pleaded guilty to the shooting that happened on the 3400 block of Chicago Avenue.

Prosecutors said Montano is a gang member who had never met Hernandez before the shooting. She was in court on Friday for the sentencing.

"I was worried to see him," Guadalupe said. "It's hard. It's hard to see the person that did so much damage."

It's a stronger sentencing than the original criminal charges called for, but because of Montano's actions, Hernandez will spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.

"If there's an upward departure from the guidelines, it has to be justified and that's just what we did," said Assistant Hennepin County Attorney Susan Crumb.

Hernandez and her family spoke after the sentencing Friday. Her mother, Hilda, remains focused on moving forward.

"My life changed completely, my child's life, my entire family's life but we have to keep moving forward," Hilda said.

Court documents said there were seven people inside the car when the shots were fired. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office said the car's driver has been charged and will appear in court next week.
