Reality Check: Gov. Dayton's 'Tax The Rich' Promise
ST. PAUL (WCCO) -- Gov. Mark Dayton and Republican leaders are hoping to finish work by midnight on a budget deal to end Minnesota's 15-day government shutdown. It's an agreement no one seems to like, including Dayton.
Dayton won the election with a very simple promise: Tax the rich. However, it was a campaign promise he did not keep.
Dayton also promised no education cuts, but is now borrowing hundreds of millions of dollars from schools to Band-Aid the budget.
Faced with uniform opposition by Republicans, Dayton abandoned those promises to fix the budget.
Now, there's bipartisan criticism for the deal Dayton made with Republicans -- notably from Dayton's fellow Democrats, who may not even vote for this budget.
